Contact Lens Removal - How To Make It An Easy Routine

Do you like the idea of wearing contacts but it's just the process of contact lens removal that scares you?

Here is a step-by-step guide to turn it from challenge into a simple routine.

Contact lenses are a fantastic way to correct your vision, especially myopia sufferers, without letting the world know that you have vision problems.

Contacts come in soft and hard varieties. Each has a set of specific instructions for insertion and removal that should be followed to avoid damage to the eye or the lens itself.

First, there are some basic things that can be done whether using soft lenses or RGP/hard lenses:

1. Make sure the hands are clean and dry.

2. Always have a clean area to work in.

3. Never use perfumed soaps before working with your contacts.

4. Lotions can be used after working with the lenses.

5. Keep your fingernails clipped and trimmed properly.

Following these guidelines will help keep the lenses clean and last longer.

Hard Contact Lens Removal

Hard contacts are considered by many to be the easiest to remove.

They are exactly what they sound like. These are not flexible and must be applied and removed carefully.

Here is how it is done:

  • Cup one of your hands under your eye.

  • If not comfortable with a cupped hand, you can put down a clean, dry soft towel instead.

  • Pull the outside corner of the eye towards the ear.

  • Now a simple blink should pop the contact lens right out.

Soft Contact Lens Removal

To remove a soft lens, follow these steps:

  • Open the eye as wide as you can.

  • If you have trouble keeping the eye open until you reach the contact lens, use one hand to hold it open.

  • Look either upwards or off to one side.

  • Now reach for the lens with the thumb and forefinger and pinch the lens. It should easily come away from the eye.

  • If the lens is dry and doesn't come away easily, use some eye drops and wait a minute.

  • Repeat for the other eye and lens.

These are the methods prescribed by the eye doctor to safely remove contact lenses.

Now, there are tools available that make this even easier and more comfortable for the wearer. These small tools are affordable, easy to use and lessen the discomfort that is felt by some contact lens wearers.

One such device is the RGP Inserter/Remover.
A suction cup attached to a short plastic shaft safely and quickly removes the lens from the eye.

All you do is wet the suction cup and place it squarely on the contact for immediate removal anywhere you happen to be. After removal, you just slide it off of the cup and into your contact holder.

For soft contacts wearers, there is the Lobob Soft Contact Insertion/Removal Kit.
The tool with a small suction cup on one end is for insertion, the tweezer is for removal. Acting on the same principle as manual removal, the lens is "squeezed" between the ridged arms and removal is complete.
