Computer Glasses And Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)

Computer glasses

Have you ever heard about computer glasses? Can you use them if you have myopia? As more people spend more time on the computer, a condition known as computer vision syndrome has appeared.

The condition is called CVS and it afflicts some 60% to 70% of people who look at a PC screen for more than two hours a day. The general effect is eye strain and it has some rather nasty symptoms, though not a life threatening condition.

This condition, CVS, is mainly suffered by employees who use a PC for the greater part of their work day. Extensive Internet surfing and gaming can also bring on the eye strain disorder.

Symptoms include:

  • strong, migraine-like headaches
  • discomfort in the upper back/neck/shoulder areas
  • burning red eyes and blurred or even double vision.

To battle this malady, eyeglasses that are “task specific” have been implemented and they are called computer glasses.

What Are Computer Glasses Good For?

Just like any other task specific pair of eyeglasses, like sports glasses, reading glasses and others, computer glasses are designed for doing computer work. Typically, this type of work is at a further distance than normal reading demands.

The purpose of computer eyeglasses is to simply make images on the PC screen look clearer and reduce the strain placed on the eyes. They also are coated to eliminate glare from the screen causing reflections on the lenses, so your eyes don’t have to constantly refocus.

Types Of Computer Eyelasses

If you have no other vision problems computer eyeglasses are meant to reduce strain and stop symptoms of CVS from either developing or becoming worse. It is a good idea, even if you do not show symptoms of CVS, to wear PC glasses if you are looking at a computer screen for more than two hours daily.

But if you have myopia or (and) presbyopia you can get computer eyeglasses with different prescriptions as well. In this case you can choose between monofocal, bifocal and trifocal computer reading glasses:

  • Monofocals - are computer reading glasses used for single vision to correct only for the distance between the PC screen and your eyes.

  • Bifocals can be used to correct for both computer and reading distance.

  • Trifocals are the most complicated form of computer reading glasses: they can provide you with upper vision (long distance), middle vision (computer screen) and near vision (reading distance).

Some insurance policies will cover some or all of the cost of computer glasses. This may not always be the case, but if you find that you need them, it won’t matter. The alternative is suffering near migraine headaches regularly or a sore back.

If you are among the work force that spends a good portion of your day looking at a PC screen, these are considered to be a necessary piece of equipment.

Frames And Lenses

Just because computer eyeglasses are somewhat of a necessity for some folks, that does not mean they have to be clunky or frumpy. As a matter of fact, they can be quite the opposite and add character to your appearance. These glasses can be fitted into a standard eyeglass frame of any style.

So whether you prefer full frames, semi-frames, frameless or a colorful plastic frame you can enjoy the benefits of wearing computer glasses. The look and fashion can be smart, affordable and rather attractive.

The type of PC glasses you require depends on your level of vision. The best way to find the right pair is to consult with an optometrist and have them prescribed. You will be happier, pain free and more productive as a result.
