As we get older, it is a natural occurrence that our vision tends to be less sharp. Even if you are not myopic and have never been a wearer of eyeglasses, there comes a day when you might need a pair of reading glasses.

Who sells the Cheapest Reading Glasses?

Let's take a look together what is important to know before you get that pair of reading glasses that suits you.

Non-Prescription Reading Glasses

These are the lowest priced reading glasses you can get. Just walk into any drug store or supermarket and there will probably be a rack of them. Usually the price range is under $20 and some are even less. You don't have to give up appearance, either. Some of the non-prescription reading glasses look very nice.

These reading glasses are available in many sizes, styles and even colors. There are wire rims, plastic rims, half rim, full rim and even a few rimless. I know all that sounds exciting but hold on before you run out to the corner store there. There is a couple of things you need to know first.

Pre-fab cheap reading glasses are mass manufactured and that makes them susceptible to defects. Like there are air bubbles that can get into the glass and cause distortion of the images you see through them. Also, the frames sometimes have defects and can be sharp or have rough edges.

Just be careful and check them over thoroughly before you buy them.

Customized Prescription Reading Glasses

You can also take the high road and have your reading glasses custom made. Prescription reading glasses are comprised of frames AND lenses. Each carries a cost and added to the cost of a doctor visit, you get the idea.

This can be expensive, but if you are worried about how you will look with them on or about possible strain pre-fab glasses might put on your eyes, go for it.

Prescription reading glasses do have a few benefits:

  • Each of your eyes is different. They are not the same and an optometrist will evaluate each eye individually. The prescription he writes for your reading glasses will accommodate each eye separately.

  • When you go to pick out the frames, you will have a wider selection than with pre-fab glasses. You can try on several styles and find the one that fits your face and individuality.

  • Also you will have a selection of lens types depending on the frames you pick.

Are Reading Glasses Useful If You Have Myopia?

The question is: do you need reading glasses if you are myopic?

With myopia (nearsightedness), either the cornea is too pointed or the eyeball itself is elongated. The result is that you can see things up close clearly, to a certain distance. The objects past that distance are blurred or fuzzy.

After you have reached a certain age (usually after 40), even if you already have myopia, your eyes might develop a condition called presbyopia. Bifocal glasses might become a necessity to correct for both problems simultaneously.

I am 30 myself with a myopia degree of -6.50, so I don't need bifocals yet. Still I feel uncomfortable while reading with my full distance prescription.

When I was wearing my full distance glasses all the time while reading or doing another close up work I noticed that it always led to worsening of distance vision. And very soon I would need a stonger prescription again.

So what works for me? I have always a pair of reading glasses by my side which means that I use -5.00 prescription when I am doing near work.

Using a weaker prescription for close up work if you are high myopic or not using glasses at all if you have low degree of myopia might lessen the strain in your eyes.
