Can I Ever Get Rid Of My Glasses?

by Jens
(Copenhagen, Denmark)

First of all, I would like to thank the author of this site for plenty of useful information. I found out a lot for myself just scrolling through this site. I always thought that I had pathologic myopia as my nearsightedness degree would never stop growing.

Last few years it has slowed down considerably. Now I go down with half of the diopter every two-three years with current prescription of -9.00 for both eyes. Now I know that my condition is called "high myopia" and I am not panicking any more about going blind one day.

I did my own search to find contact lenses just to get rid of the my thick glasses. But it just never worked out. Every time I thought I found something that might fit, it would be a big disappointment at the end of the day or, if I was extremely lucky, at the end of the week. I tried conventional lenses, disposable month and day lenses and even RGP. No success.

Then the silicone hydrogel era has broken out and I gave it the last chance. Acuvue Oasis, Air Optix - are just a few I tried out. I liked them first. Very fresh feeling when they are just in. But after a couple of hours - yep, here we go again. Where are my glasses?

I was seriously considering surgery, I read much about it, maybe even too much because...I just got scared. Not for surgery - for its possible side effects. And the idea that your cornea would become so thin that you would never be able to try out another new pair of lenses recently launched to the market :))

So I am stuck. I don't know if I ever can get rid of my terrible glasses especially because my prescription is still getting higher. Last week I ordered Air Optix Day&Night. There are folks who spend 30 days AND nights wearing the same pair of lenses all the time. I thought maybe I can stand them for at least 8 hours. I will keep you up to date if this was of any improvement to me.

Does anyone have other suggestions what might work for me? What does work for you? I believe that was my myopia story. Thanks for reading.
